In this episode, Belle chats with vintage denim expert and owner of Junkyard Jeans, Eric Schrader. Eric is an Idaho-based vintage buyer and reseller who specializes in denim and military apparel. He has twenty-five years of experience in the vintage resale market and has sold at The Rose Bowl, in addition to his individual clients around the world. Eric also sells his pieces to design departments at premium denim and luxury brands, including American Eagle, Levi's, RRL (a luxury line by Ralph Lauren), Valentino and Vetements. These brands then use these pieces as inspiration for their products and collections.
Eric buys and sells between 2,000-3,000 pieces a month and is the former host of a vintage auction in Japan. In addition, his business, Junkyard Jeans, creates custom, chain-stitched pieces for performers in New York and Los Angeles. Eric travels the world year-round to source the highest quality pieces and educates everyday people on the value of their denim and what to look for when thrifting. He even starred in a denim documentary, called Blue Gold: American Jeans, that dives into the history of denim, it's role culture, and how it's being produced and sold today.
In this episode, we dive into how Eric got his start in the vintage resale business and how he started his own store, Junkyard Jeans. You'll also learn what went into making the documentary, Blue Gold: American Jeans, how Eric currently sources his pieces, and how his business survived the pandemic. He even tells the story of when American country music duo, Brother's Osborne, stopped by the Junkyard Jeans store.
Get excited to hear advice on how to get started in the vintage resale business, Eric's favorite Boise, San Francisco, and Los Angeles vintage stores, details about his own personal denim collection, and so much more!
