No feels like a taboo word in teaching. It often feels wrong to say no, like we are being disrespectful, selfish or even disruptive. The “yes” culture of teaching can feel toxic and lead to teacher resentment, teacher burnout and the retention crisis that the education sector is currently experiencing.
What you will learn in this episode:
• The power of choice: you can say no
• What may be driving you to say yes when you want to say no
• Ways that you can learn to say no to others
Find small opportunities this week to practise saying no or that give you the opportunity to think about your options before you respond. Saying no is a new muscle to build; it takes time but it will help you to create those clear boundaries so that you can love teaching again.
