SHOW NOTES:

  • Rap acts that we discuss include NWA, The Bomb Squad, Too $hort, Eazy-E, Dr. Dre and Scarface.
  • We talk about a lot of songs by (or featuring) Ice Cube. “Express Yourself” (especially the clean version) is positive and uplifting. “I Ain’t the 1”, “Givin Up the Nappy Dugout” and “Nothin’ But A Word” are songs you don’t want to play for your mom. “Natural Born Killaz” is a prime example of 90s horrorcore rap. “Black Korea” doesn’t really make you feel good about anyone.
  • It’s crazy that the movie Friday is over 25 years old! The sequels aren’t as good, largely because they lack Chris Tucker. The original Friday was adapted into an animated series in 2007; Jake watched the first episode and it was pretty fun (if occasionally offensive).
  • Ice Cube didn’t endorse Trump, but lots of people (including Saturday Night Live) implied that he did.
  • Neither Phil nor Jake had read A Contract With Black America before recording this episode, but Jake read it after-the-fact, and agrees with like 95% of it. It’s a noble project that deserves attention.
  • Here’s a Billboard article that summarizes the recent controversy that led to Ice Cube being accused of anti-Semitism. Cube appears to have made an effort to amend things with the Jewish community by establishing a relationship with the Zionist Organization of America.
  • Phil refers to a quote about going broke, noting that it might be from Groucho Marx. The quote is actually from Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises: “How did you go bankrupt?” Bill asked. “Two ways,” Mike said. “Gradually and then suddenly.”
  • Legend has it that Phil once rode a bicycle across the United States. This is when he (allegedly) came upon George Washington Carver’s birthplace.
