In this short episode, I (Sam, your host) explore the topic of when you identify as spiritual or are exploring spiritual or mystical beliefs and modalities, and your partner does not resonate with those beliefs.
This can be hard when you suddenly see the world very differently (1) than you did previously and (2) than you partner does. A lot can come up and you can wonder - is this relationship going to work when we have different belief systems and interests.
For some people, holding the same spiritual and religious beliefs is very important. But sometimes, we can think that if we had the same spiritual beliefs, that would solve our problem, when in fact, we are actually craving something else.
I outline how the tension or desire for the same beliefs may actually be:
(1) a desire to share your experiences with someone who gets it and to be validated in them,
(2) a fear that your partner is not willing to grow and work on themselves,
(3) a desire to spend time together and share a common interest, or
(4) a desire to step into a more intentional lifestyle, or simple a different lifestyle, and wanting your partner to be on board.
I also discuss some common pitfalls or challenges, which include (1) one partner mocking or dismissing the other’s new beliefs, (2) hiding your interests or beliefs, (3) trying to force or push their interest, (4) assume they are not interested or don’t care.
