#16 Whirlwind of Truth: Tornado Myth Debunking

Listen Later

Join Leigh and Angie as they separate tornado fact from fiction to keep you safe. Tornadoes are highly destructive, so understanding facts vs. myths is crucial for safety. In this episode, Leigh and Angie will debunk common tornado misconceptions.

Myth 1: Tornadoes cannot cross large bodies of water. False - The 1925 Tri-State Tornado crossed the Mississippi River.

Myth 2: Tornadoes target mobile homes. Untrue - Mobile homes are just more vulnerable to tornado winds.

Myth 3: Visible funnel clouds are required. Tornadoes can cause damage without a visible funnel as winds may be hidden by rain.

Myth 4: Southwest basement corners are safest. The safest shelter is an interior room on the lowest floor away from windows.

Myth 5: Opening windows reduces damage. Opening windows allows damaging winds inside and does not balance pressure.

Leigh and Angie also dispel myths that tornadoes cannot hit cities, travel up/down hills, and that overpasses provide adequate shelter. They emphasize that flying debris causes most tornado injuries and deaths. Heed warnings, and seek shelter immediately. Prepare emergency plans and kits. Staying informed saves lives.

Remember, thinking is the first step of being prepared.
