What is tone? Although there are many definitions of the term, the tone is most commonly described as the style in which a piece of writing is done. Tone can be serious or playful, formal or informal. In order to write a piece of writing that is both engaging and informative, it's important to understand the tone of your work. For the writer, this means that you have to be aware of how you want your audience to feel when they are reading your work. Do you want them to feel angry at the injustice in society? Or do you want them to feel enlightened about a topic that they didn't know much about before?
