17. After Beating COVID

After beating COVID

Memaw died at 86

of all other causes

right before Christmas this year.

I typically feel

mournful tears rise

when a loved one dies.

But today at her burial I could not cry.

Cathartic tears did not

well up in my eyes.

I guess because I saw it...

As in far-off.

She’s gone somewhere

I soon will follow.

But I don’t mean

this same ground

in this same hollow.

But follow Memaw to ‘Heaven’,

the great cosmic Valhalla.

So, I just stood there

and stared off down the hill.

Remembering fried-chicken,

“boy-fudge”, and apple-butter.

Wishing Memaw’s heart

was still full

of Memaw’s flutter.

And we were gathered round

her table for another

famous after-church

Sunday-supper.
