My husband and I went to Tahiti on our first overseas trip in 1998. Immigration was very laid-back, and we were surprised by the huge Paul Gauguin paintings and the giant ceiling fans. We stayed at Moorea island. To get there, we had to take a 40-minute domestic flight from the main island.

One of our best memories from the trip was when we met a French woman while we were sea-kayaking from Moorea to an uninhabited island. She told us she was working for a luxury hotel in Moorea and that it was her day off.

We kept some distance because she was topless. However, when I picked up a coconut and was trying to figure out how to break it open, she came to teach me how to do it. She remained topless as she tried to break it using the sharp tip of a tree protruding from the ground. She smashed the coconut onto it again and again, but it wasn’t working. However, she didn't give up and even started sweating.

We thanked her for her kindness as we stood there feeling a little awkward because of her swaying breasts.

Just when I was thinking about what I should say to her in English… something like “Please stop, thank you,” the coconut broke and we could drink the juice that was inside!

Even though the coconut juice wasn’t good at all, it is still a good memory for me.

Maybe for my husband as well.... —————————
