How I Met Myself

17. How To Stop Avoiding Grief And What We Stand To Gain When We Face It

Listen Later

Grief and loss are inevitable parts of life, and yet we are so ill-prepared for them. Following the loss of her father-in-law, Jessica reflects on grief - why our culture tends to avoid it and how we can engage with it in order to better process the emotions as well as support others after losing a loved one.

Despite the common phrase, “everyone grieves in their own way,” Jessica explores several themes that are pretty universal when it comes to grief. In this solo episode, she offers guidance to those grieving and those supporting the bereaved, and discusses:

  • The importance of community in the face of a loss
  • Why you shouldn’t give the bereaved space and instead sit with them in their grief
  • How to provide emotional support for someone who is in mourning
  • Advice on how to lighten the load for someone who is grieving without being a burden

  • She also talks about the importance of talking about death and grief with children in order to help them prepare for the inevitability of losing a loved one.

She says, when we run toward grief, it offers us an opportunity for growth and greater connection.
