Today I would like to talk about Taylor Tomlinson, who I have been obsessed with over the past couple of months, now I am repeatedly watching her stand-up stage on Netflix again, and again and again. I love her stage overwhelmingly, today I need to talk about this because I cannot handle my energy towards her shows and now I am like, I might have been studying English throughout my life in order to encounter herself, to happen to watch her stages and to make sense of her jokes.
Firstly, let me give you guys a rough understanding of who she is.
Taylor Tomlinson is a stand-up comedian born in 1993, in Orange County, California.
You must be surprised that she began performing comedy at age 16, performing in church and school talent shows. One of her breakout moments came when she appeared on NBC's "Last Comic Standing" in 2015, where she reached the semi-finals. This exposure helped boost her profile in the comedy world. By the way “Last Comic Standing” appears to be an American Version of M-1 Grand Prix of Japan to me. this is an American reality television talent competition show to select a comedian from an initially large group of hopefuls. The prize is way higher undoubtedly, a winner of Last Comic Standing is supposed to receive 250,000 USD.
Tomlinson's first Netflix stand-up special, Quarter-Life Crisis, was released in March 2020. She was placed on the Forbes Under 30 list in December 2021. Her second Netflix stand-up special, Look At You, was released in March 2022. Her third Netflix special, Have it All, was filmed in Washington, D.C. at the end of November 2023 and was released on February 13, 2024. Tomlinson has been very successful using TikTok, making her the seventh-most-followed female comedian on the platform in 2022. Obviously, she is one of the most powerful and successful comedians of the age.
Let me tell you why I am such obsessed with her. Personally, I feel like sometimes it is difficult to feel a comedian’s stage funny especially when they joke about politics, racism, drugs or sex even though they are really common topics in the world of comedy. I tend to be confused that all audience are laughing but myself. I am like I don’t understand this because of my English level or cultural understanding or what. No idea at this moment. What makes her comedy special to me is that her comedy is so relatable. Tomlinson's comedy often focuses on personal experiences, relationships, and observations about life as a young adult. Being almost the same age as myself also might make her episodes attractive and relatable. High chances are her comedy doesn’t require specific cultural understandings or specific strong opinions towards politics.
I wanna tell you the best of her jokes. One of her girlfriends broke up with her partner and her ex-boyfriend uploaded a photo with his new girlfriend who is a model. Right after she found the photo, she called that girlfriend to try not to look up social media by saying “Have you been online today? Why not do a no-screens day or maybe crack the bible open one more time?” unfortunately her friend already saw the photo and devastated to see his new girlfriend. She was crying and said “Honestly I wish he was just dating a man instead because if he dumped me for a man, then he just wanted something I could never be!” then Taylor goes, “The model is kind of, something you could never be. If you are a model, we are all models, this is not a model squad, this is a personality squad. This is a different team you are on…” I loved that joke so so so much. I love how overwhelmingly she reacts and emphasizes her beak-up friend does not look model. It was hilarious. People may feel guilty a little but super funny. Now you should well understand how funny she is, how much I love her and what makes her special to me. I definitely recommend all of you guys giving a shot to watch her comedy show and I am eager to watch her stage in person in the future in my life.
