17 | Transition Survival Series Part 3: Living Independently, A Chat With Molly Denny, Ph. D.

If you have a loved one with a disability and have wondered if they are ever going to be able to live independently and have their own life separate from their parents, this episode is for you. I sit down with Molly Denny, Ph.D., the Director of Community Life at Daymark Living in Waxahachie, TX. We talk about what it's like transitioning our loved ones with physical and intellectual disabilities into a full and thriving adult life that provides the social network, the stimulation and the safety they need, want and deserve. Specifically, Dr. Denny covers the following:

  • what an independent living facility like Daymark looks like and provides for our loved ones
  • what skills are needed to successfully transition to an independent living situation
  • how to start preparing now for this transition after they become an adult
  • Dr. Molly Sullivan Denny attended Baylor University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus in communication sciences and disorders. She received both her master’s and doctoral degrees from Texas Woman’s University with a research focus on the effects of early intervention on the development of children with Down syndrome and the family dynamics of perceptions of siblings who have a child with special needs in their family. She worked at the Rise School of Dallas as a lead teacher from 2000-2007 and was awarded Outstanding Educator of the Year by the Down Syndrome Guild of Dallas in 2004. Dr. Denny was the Educational Coordinator at The Rise School of Dallas from 2006-2009. She has been a contributing author for a book on public school reform titled Yes We Can! Improving Urban Schools Through Innovative Education Reform and was a special interest author for Texarkana Parenting Magazine. Dr. Denny was an adjunct professor for Texas Woman’s University in the Family Studies Department from 2003-2018 and has been the Director of Community Life for Daymark Living since 2015.
