17. What An MS Diagnosis Taught This Magazine Owner About Taking Risks

Listen Later

Today on the show I’m talking to my friend, Alison Engstrom, founder of Brooklyn-based, print magazine, Rose & Ivy.
From the very first discovery of her mother’s copies of Vogue, she was entranced by print and moved to New York from Charleston, South Carolina with the hopes of securing a role in the beauty department of one of the women’s magazines. But this all happened against the backdrop of the recession. Nobody was hiring and it was the start of teams shrinking and the closure of many of the beloved magazines we’ve all grown up with.
It’s what promoted her transition into marketing before ultimately closing that door and going full circle in creating a print magazine of her own.
Alison and I talk about what it was like being laid off, not once, twice but three times from marketing roles and how, looking back, it seems like the universe had always been trying to point her in a different direction.
She talks candidly about being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a month before her wedding day, and how her diagnosis gave her the confidence to follow her bliss and pursue her dream.
We also talk about how she started the magazine with no industry contacts and is now working with leading designers and rising talent on covers, only two and a half years in.
