173: From Paying Down Student Loan Debt to Real Estate Investor with Sam Khairi

Listen Later

Moved to the Bay Area from Canada after accumulating a lot of student loan debt. Originally from Canada, he and his wife moved to the Bay Area in 2011 and have managed to establish a solid foundation for their futures including their two young sons. An Engineer by education, he has spent most of his professional career managing capital improvement projects as well as large infrastructure portfolios in various industries including transportation, water systems as well as oil and gas.

A few years into his career, he and his wife realized that their financial projections were not meeting their expectation especially with the high salaries they were earning at the time. With nearly $500,000 in student loan debt, they found themselves at a fork where they needed to find alternative methods to, not only, pay off their student loan debt but to be able to find financial freedom much sooner than they were projecting.

They happened to "stumble" into Real Estate as they began their research. They began with purchasing single-family properties but soon realized that scalability was one of their challenges if they wanted to keep on that path. With more research, they learned about investing in multi-family properties and various ways they could benefit from this asset class. After learning more about the investment opportunities they began by passively investing.

The situation that was caused by COVID-19 in 2020 put a lot of things in perspective for him and was a big driver for him to treat real estate investing as a business rather than something he was doing on the side.  He wanted to make sure he was setting up the infrastructure so that he was able to begin growing and scaling his investments.
