Join Journalist and historian Howard E. Lewis as he lectures on Fort Mose the first freed black town in America. Mr. Lewis will also discuss  the great walls of the Castillo de San Marcos (Castle of St. Mark) which were completed with the contributions of 11 free Africans who were paid for their work as skilled artisans.

In 1689, and thereafter, stonecutters were also instrumental in the construction of private coquina homes once permission was given to be able to use material from the royal quarry on Anastasia Island.

There a certain amount of military strategy involved in the King's decree of 1693 acknowledging the  Black opposition to English chattel slavery.
