We have personally dealt with the challenges presented by environmental inaccessibility as educators, advocates, and orientation and mobility (O&M) specialists for people with visual impairments. Imagine being able to hear the traffic while crossing a busy street without any sensory information to help you do so safely. Since this is usually the case for those who are visually impaired, advocating for environmental accessibility and attentive traffic engineering plays a crucial role to our learners and their independence.
💡 In This Episode:
Understanding the Laws: ADA vs. MUTCD
Learn about the key differences between ADA requirements (what must happen) and MUTCD guidelines (what should happen) and why these standards matter in accessible pedestrian crossings.
Local-Level Advocacy Tips
Discover ways to connect with city traffic engineers, join local pedestrian groups, and use tools like the 311 app to report issues and create a paper trail for APS device improvements.
State & Federal-Level Advocacy for Environmental Accessibility
We’ll explore how to reach out to state bicycle and pedestrian coordinators, and connect with national organizations like Vision Zero and the Federal Highway Administration to push for change.
