Young Abigail suffers greatly from the way she is being raised by her mother, for whom a woman's only place is in the kitchen. At the same time, her father's dedicated fight for freedom also ignites in her a passion for the American Revolution. When news of her father's death reaches her, she has a falling out with her mother. Soon after, Abigail goes on her way to fight for freedom and independence, like her father had done.
On the way, she encounters the young English deserter Edward, who has come to the realization that he went to war for the wrong ideals and who also wants to join the Continental Army.
Soon, the two discover their true feelings for each other as the turmoil of the American Revolutionary War begins for them a time of uncertainty, of hope and of terror. Is the burning torch of their love strong enough to withstand the storm?

Very Disappointed
I was hoping this book would be about the American Revolution and the part women played in it. While there actually was a Dr. Warren, later General Warren who died at the Battle of Bunker Hill, the character in the book does not portray him accurately. Dr. Joseph Warren never joined with Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Men as the book suggests. The book is more about the fictitious daughter, Abigail and the conflict between her and mother. Then Abigail's "flight to fight as a man" in the Revolution where she meets a deserting British soldier. The usual - fall in love, wounded in battle, and both are saved and healed of their wounds. Very little about the Revolution and where this battlefield actually was. I really enjoy historical and historical romantic books, unfortunately, this was neither. I am glad I read this so I will know not to look for the other books of the series. Sorry for such a low rating, but this was a very disappointing read.
Now, I've heard everything
Usually, when I read a wildly inaccurate historical novel, I assume that the author just didn't understand the importance of research. He or she didn't understand that having 21st century people in costumes did not a historical novel make, so to speak. And that's the sort of review I'd have posted here, until I read Mr. Burns' afterward. But let's let Mr. Burns speak for himself. 'This book is many things, but one thing it is not is a history lesson. Reading this book should be entertaining, and while history is very entertaining, it is not the intent of this novel to follow a series of historical events.' Hmm. If history is entertaining, why does it need to be adapted so that it 'does not become arduous to read'? Perhaps because the author is unwilling to take the time? The author goes on to proclaim that he used 'real' people as models for his characters...that is, he took their names, and changed the details of their lives enough that the poor souls wouldn't be able to recognize themselves.
