Proslavery Missourians who voted and participated in Kansas’s territorial politics legally, extralegally, illegally, and often with threats and violence were the first to be called border ruffians.

The 1856 Republican National Convention Party Platform called for Kansas to be admitted as a Free State; and in clear, direct language strongly opposed slavery.

The 1856 Democratic National Convention went 17 rounds, ultimately nominating Buchanan and Breckinridge.
