#18 Book review: The Subtle Art of Not Giving A Fuck

Listen Later

First of all, if you are an English learner, “give a fuck” or “give a shit” sounds dirty or crude but the reality is this means “care” or “mind”. So if you use I don’t give a fuck or I don’t give a shit, it means, I don’t care about it. Or I don’t mind which is common expression among casual conversation. So you don’t have to be scared to hear any dirty talk from this book.

Overall, I loved this book so much. From his way of writing, I can see the author’s personality a lot and he says he was not a good person, he used to cheat on someone, there were some certain duration that he didn’t work due to lazyness. In my opinion, a person who has done something wrong and being able to show any regrets in an honest and straightforward way is more trustworthy than people acting like right or good people. His way of saying is assertive, I love that point, too.

Let me give you 5 best quotes from this book.

No.1 “Problems never end. The problem we solved today will bear tomorrow’s problem. However we can choose the problem. Hapiness is coming from solving problems.”

I know it is not new to everyone because it is as same as it depends on how you think of but this is much more true for me. I love the glasses he wears. Frankly speaking, I hate people saying like “you can do it whatever!””It is going to be okay.” things like easy-going, shallow mindset. It doesn’t work and it is helpless for me. I love being realistic and the reality is problems never end. But we can choose.

No.2 “Self-esteem, by itself, is overrated. It doesn’t help to feel good about yourself unless you have a good reason for feeling that way. The struggle makes self-esteem useful, not the participation trophy.”

Same concept as No.1. I couldn’t agree more that statement. I am not comfortable to see “be proud of yourself” “love yourself” “you are beautiful as you are” I am always like “it depends.””it depends on “what you did” or “only when you deserve.”

No.3 “Your problems are not privileged in their severity or pain. You are not unique in your suffering.” Best reminder for my life. I tend to feel “am I the only one person in this world to see the world like this?” or “it looks like no one feels uncomfortable in this situation” for example, I didn’t want to go to the class party even though I know we as international students better go connecting with people proactively because I wanted to spend my time with someone who are also interested me. I sometimes felt like I am not good at being social, am I only one person to feel so?” but probabury some people feel same way. Then I can be friends with them.

No.4 “Action isn’t just the effect of motivation; it’s also the cause of it. Do something and inspiration will follow.”

Especially after I came to Canada, I found it indispensable for my life. I am the type of the person needs a plan ahead to do something which supposed to be meticulous and well-structured. But one day I realized it makes everything slow. Better act first for me. Actually my bestie is certainly an act-first person which affects me a lot. While acting without a plan, we come up with something. Moreover, it feels good as long as being into being engrossed with something. It creates next step automatically. Best findings.

No.5 “You are going to die someday. Everyone you know is going to die soon. And in your short life you only have a certain amount of fucks to give.”

We hear this a lot. Many times. But the point is “This is the only thing certain to happen. Else, we don’t know anything.” as we age, people start feeling, we become mature, experienced, and knowledgeable about something. It looks dumb, lame, awful to me because we are not sure about anything. Things will happen and surprise us all the time. I just want to be aware of it.

Again, what I have said so far is all my point of view. Make sure that you don’t give a fuck how I feel but if you get interested in reading this book, I am as happy as can be.
