Realizing that many people were shorting the stock, redditors started buying up as many GME stocks as they could, driving up the price of the stock and triggering a "short squeeze", in which people who shorted the stock start buying shares in order to forestall even greater losses.  

This creates a vicious cycle, further driving up the price of shares, which can be very damaging to those who shorted the stock, but very beneficial to those who invested early.   

The surge over the past two weeks has created more than $2 billion in personal wealth for the company’s three biggest individual shareholders.
