18 - Herod's Good Brother

Did you know Herod Antipas’s brother was a leader in the early church? Yes, one of the most evil kings in the bible, had a brother who was an elder in one of the most vibrant and influential early churches of Acts. He even helped start out the Apostle Paul, but what might have happened to make him switch allegiances?

This episode answers that while defining the name “Manaen” (Μαναήν) in Acts 13:1.

Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul.(Acts 13:1-NIV)

Acts 13:1 - Ἦσαν δὲ ἐν Ἀντιοχείᾳ κατὰ τὴν οὖσαν ἐκκλησίαν προφῆται καὶ διδάσκαλοι ὅ τε Βαρνάβας καὶ Συμεὼν ὁ καλούμενος Νίγερ, καὶ Λούκιος ὁ Κυρηναῖος, Μαναήν τε Ἡρῴδου τοῦ τετραάρχου σύντροφος καὶ Σαῦλος.
