From Greek philosphers and the Bible to the questions our relatives ask us ("do you have a boyfriend? when are you getting married?") to what we've come to expect from Disney movies and rom-coms, the idea of us needing one, end-all-be-all romantic partner to become "whole" is a tale as old as time.
