[Slide 1] Turn in your bible to James chapter 3.
Today we will find ourselves in the middle of a transition. James is still talking about how would-be-teachers should think long and hard about becoming a teacher of the Word.
His first caution focused on their speech and how dangerous our tongues can be. Now he will give another argument as to why they should think twice about becoming teachers.
I don’t think that if we said that teachers of God’s Word should be wise, it would be a controversial statement. I think most people would agree that if you are going to teach the Word of God, then you must be wise or at least that such a task would require wisdom.
But James has already talked about wisdom. So that cannot be the next “lack” that he raises, can it? Is he repeating himself? We will find that the true definition of wisdom is only a segue to get to the actual lack that his audience may have. If they desire to teach, and have this lack, it would be quite disastrous for themselves and the church.
The next lack – is lacking humility and peace. We might quibble and say that those are actually two lacks. But as James continues, I think we will see that there is no peace without humility and there is no humility that does not bring peace. Therefore, both are necessary for each other.
I am in James 3. I’ll start reading in verse 13. I am reading from the Christian Standard Bible today, but you can follow along in the pew bible on page 1362 or in whatever version you prefer.
