#18 Perfectionism in Practice with Sanah Ali

Perfectionism in practice
One month on and I am still talking about perfectionism?? Yes indeed. So I have decided to experiment with a slightly different format whereby:
1. Month 1: Ted Talk with myself taking a deep dive into the literature and giving a short and sweet summary.
2. Month 2: A personal feel usually with a guest with relevant or interesting viewpoints surrounding the months previous subject.
I feel that this format will allow me to still get a bit deep in the literature but additionally keep true to what this whole thing is about which is being personal and relatable. Furthermore, it takes a bit of pressure off my spare time into something manageable.
Update over- this episode.
This week I am joined again by the lovely Sanah- A fellow Neuroscience graduate. Sanah is someone who like me grapples with a bit of perfectionism in her everyday life. In the episode, we dissect what perfectionism looks like in our own lives. We think about why we might be perfectionists and why it is both sometimes a positive and a negative.
Overall, we come to a collective conclusion that perfectionism can sometimes lead to us being exceedingly goal-orientated whereby the “journey” is somewhat lost on us and furthermore, we contrive little satisfaction in achieving. Ultimately keeping perfectionism in reasonable limits involves:
-challenging our inner-self-critic,
-dealing with failure in a compassionate way
-seeking advise from friends is central to ensuring that perfectionism does not get the better of us.
