18. Residential Schools & Intergenerational Trauma

Listen Later

PEPAḴIYE Ashley Cooper is a member of the Tsartlip First Nation on Vancouver Island (BC).  She tells the story of how her family, culture, language, and community has been DEEPLY impacted (almost destroyed) by colonialism and how she has learned to reconnect with it and rebuild herself and her culture.

We also talk about mental health (depression, bipolar, anxiety); The Residential School system and it's profound impacts on inter-generational politics; language revitalization; internalized racism; stereotypes; stigma; self-harm, abusive relationships (family and self); alcohol & drug abuse; calling parents out on sexism & racism; coping with feelings; living in settler society; suicide attempts; being an introvert but learning to be more outgoing; fear of change; finding purpose and meaning; hope for the future (children); and SO MUCH MORE!

Ashlee is a true inspiration and a beautiful person; I promise you will enjoy this episode!
