Bill Newton was born on Bell Island and is an accomplished engineering entrepreneur and volunteer board member of Perchance Theatre.
Bill worked with two or three engineering firms but felt he could do it on his own and created Newton Engineering in 1982.
“One thing in business is you have to have the right personality and don’t burn any bridges. That was key... and hire the right people, because you have to have the right people around you to build a business.”
60 to 70% of Bill’s business was in the fishery and with 16 staff in 1992 the cod moratorium hit him hard. He went down to 3 people and the economy started to come back. “The oil industry was frightening a lot of the engineering firms around St. John’s” but Bill approached Husky Energy and they said ok to working together.
