Hitting the mid-point of the 1870s, Canada started work on the Canadian Pacific Railway, negotiations on Treaty 5 began and Ontario would go through an election with Oliver Mowat winning the first of many. It was also the birth year for a future Governor General, and it saw the passing of a notable pioneer woman.
