The year that saw St. John's burned to the ground in a tragic fire, 1892 was also the year when BC's premier suddenly died, Sir John Abbott resigned as prime minister and was replaced by Sir John Sparrow David Thompson. This was also the year that "America's Sweetheart" Mary Pickford was born, and former Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie died.
