I've always been struck by the immediacy of the disciples response to drop everything when Jesus said to them, "follow me" in Matthew 4, Mark 1, Luke 5, and John 1.

What would cause someone to just up and leave everything at the drop of a hat at an invitation like that?

The oddity of that response by the disciples all changed, when I came across the historical Jewish context behind those two words: "follow me."
