#19 Inflammatory Bowel Disease

**Inflammatory Bowel Disease**
Hello and yet again it is podcast time!
This month I am back talking about inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
I have decided to speak about this because:
1) I am currently a junior doctor based on a gastroenterology ward so I see lots of patients with IBD.
2) I know lots of individuals whom live with inflammatory bowel disease
So this episode forms the first part of my two-monthly series on IBD and this episode is all the basics.
1) Inflammatory Bowel Disease involves a spectrum of autoimmune conditions affecting the bowel and consists mainly of two conditions Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative colitis
2) These are common diseases with UC affecting about 1 in 400 people in the UK whereas Crohn's about 1 in 700 people in the UK.
3) Whilst separate in many ways, both tend to cause profuse diarrhoea and abdominal pain as well as spectrum of other sequelae.
4) This is primarily a chronic disease of younger people. However, can affect older individuals as well (but less commonly)
If any of you know individuals who have Crohn’s or UC this podcast is likely to be highly informative. In this I breakdown the subtypes, I explain the basics of the symptoms, how we investigate these disease and finally how we treat these diseases. I give a brief rundown of what the future may look like in terms of treatment and then just give my perspective on Crohn’s and UC.
Realistically, any chronic disease represent a huge change in any individuals life. However, Crohn’s and UC as diseases of younger people can be highly damaging to the education and social life of individuals who are meant to be in some of their most formative years. It was this in part that spurred me to do this episode.

Take it easy guys,
