When workers went on strike Belfast in 1919 it was within days of the declaration of an Irish Republic and 2 police constables being shot in an ambush. The workers brought Belfast to a complete halt cutting off electricity (although the kept hospitals supplied). The Government reacted by bringing in the army, placing machine guns at the electricity station and other vital infrastructure locations, breaking the strike.
