#197: Three Levels Of Consciousness

Listen Later

I am listening to the book Already Free by Bruce Tift Ma and have found the information very interesting and useful. One of the chapters discusses the 3 levels of consciousness which I found to be a very interesting take on how to be or operate in the world. Each level of awareness is focused on how we relate to conflict.

Level 1: internal conflict is related to blaming other individuals for discomfort. For example blaming the government, the world, parents, life circumstances, upbringing, etc. In this level of consciousness, power is given externally from oneself and there are no actionable ways to take control. Individuals naturally progress to level 2 through mentorship, reflection, and the eventual exhaustion of reoccurring patterns of conflict.

Level 2: Internal conflict is related to by taking personal power and control for the situation. At this level, conflicts are handled personally and ownership is taken by the individual feeling the conflict. Through personal ownership, power is given internally and the individual is able to work on themselves and change the variables around them to improve one's ability to handle life conflicts.

Level 3: Internal conflict is related to understanding that conflict is a natural consequence of physical form and will always be present in some manner. Anxiety, agitation, frustration, anger, confusion, dilemmas, etc., will always be part of the physical experience. Through this understanding, there is reduced resistance to conflict as it is. Conflict is understood as a natural part of the journey of life. In this level of consciousness, one can utilize what has been learned at levels 1 and 2, while acknowledging and relaxing through the discomforts of life by being in the present and immediate moment. Conflict at this level is handled through experiencing life at the level of physical sensations and relaxing psychological interpretations. This level of consciousness may be described as an embodiment and retaining present awareness in the body.
