But Meryl began a string of great 1990s nominations with her role in the same movie, based on the novel by Carrie Fisher. Elsewhere, Whoopi Goldberg was finally getting her due for Ghost, Martin Scorsese was not getting his for Goodfellas, and a malevolent Kathy Bates hammered her way into our hearts with Misery.
