In this long-awaited episode, three of Her Majesty's finest subjects discuss the generational change that was the 1996 Australian Federal Election.

Some time back, we covered the unloseable election - John Hewson being undone by a birthday cake. Well, more specifically, a question about a birthday cake. 

That was 1993, and little did we know that we were about to witness a the beginning of a generational change in Australian politics. 

Paul Keating wins the unwinnable election in 1993, in 1994 John Hewson loses a challenge to his position as opposition leader and two years later retires from politics altogether, Alexander Downer becomes Opposition Leader in 1994 with deputy Peter Costello. Unfortunately, poor polls, bad political judgement and a bad joke about domestic violence sees him step down  

The things that batter. 

And in 1995, a resurgent John Howard takes the reigns with Costello as deputy. 

One of the first things Howard does is unify the party - one of Alexander Downer's most famous quotes is that he would personally kneecap anyone who undermined Howard's attempt at winning PM.
