Chequered Past

1st October 1967: The Broken Lotus That Couldn’t Stop Clark

Listen Later

On October 1st, Formula 1 history gave us one of Jim Clark’s grittiest victories. At Watkins Glen in 1967, the Scotsman nursed a failing Lotus across the line to win ahead of Graham Hill, while Denny Hulme edged closer to the world title.

Eleven years later, Carlos Reutemann delivered his final Ferrari triumph at the same circuit in 1978, as Alan Jones signalled his rise to the front.

We also remember Jean-Pierre Jabouille, who gave F1 its first turbocharged victory, and Willy Mairesse, whose fiery career ended in tragedy.

And in 2017, Max Verstappen shone in Malaysia, while Sebastian Vettel hitched a ride back to the pits in one of the sport’s most unforgettable images.
