On this last episode dedicated to Brazil, Sonido Tupinamba met Dj Tahira in front of Niemeyer's Copan building to talk about the afro and indigenous roots of this musical country.Tahira is DJ, producer and digger that blends genres and eras, from traditional sounds to the electronic mixtures from the DJ culture. Emerging from the Sao Paulo scene in the ’90s, Tahira has become famous for seeking all varieties of Afro-Brazilian music. His reworks have become classics for DJs such as Francois K, Gilles Peterson, Nightmares on Wax and more and his recently released edit of Gilberto Gil’s “Toda Menina Baiana” received the seal of approval from Gil himself. His quest for lost and forgotten movements of Brazilian music (more than 30 rhythms) include samba de coco, catalysed by slavery in the 19th century, embraced by the working class and almost banished to obscurity by the musical elite.
