2 Corinthians 12 & 13

Welcome to The Safe Space!

Paul continues, though reluctantly, to speak about visions and revelations from the Lord. He tells of a man in Christ who was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body, he does not know; only God knows. There he heard things so astounding that they cannot be expressed in words. Yet Paul refuses to boast about such experiences. Instead, he chooses to boast only about his weaknesses.

Even though he has received such surpassing revelations, God gave him a thorn in the flesh—a messenger of Satan to torment him and keep him from becoming proud. Three times he begged the Lord to take it away. But the Lord said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now Paul gladly boasts about his weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through him. He takes pleasure in weaknesses, in insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles suffered for Christ. For when he is weak, then he is strong.

Paul reminds the Corinthians that he has given them every proof of being a true apostle—signs, wonders, and miracles performed with great perseverance. He never burdened them financially, and though he loves them deeply, he wonders if that love has been returned.

He fears that when he comes, he may find quarreling, jealousy, anger, selfishness, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorder. He is concerned that some have not repented of their impurity, sexual immorality, and eagerness for lustful pleasure. If so, his visit will bring grief instead of joy.

As he prepares to come again, Paul warns that every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. He will not spare those who continue in sin. They are asking for proof that Christ is speaking through him, and they will find that Christ is not weak, but powerful among them. Though Christ was crucified in weakness, he lives by God’s power—and Paul says that same power is at work in him.

So Paul challenges them: examine yourselves to see if your faith is genuine. Test yourselves. Surely they know that Jesus Christ is among them—unless they have failed the test.

In his final words, Paul urges them to grow to maturity, encourage one another, live in harmony, and live in peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with them. He closes with a blessing: “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”

Verse of the Day: Isaiah 43:2

When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.
