The threat of false confidence is real, but so is genuine assurance— certain knowledge that we belongs to Christ. We must therefore examine ourselves to see if Christ is truly in us; by our doctrine, by our obedience, by our growth in grace, and by the testimony of the Spirit—and rest our confidence not on anything we find in ourselves but Jesus.
