*corrections: At one point during our discussions we refer to this movie as being Spike Lee’s first film, and have since learned it was not. It was his third feature film (following “She’s Gotta Have It” (1986) and “School Daze” (1988)), but our opinions still hold true that this film is an impressive showing for one of his earlier films, but not necessarily his first.
