De afgelopen weken was Meta - het moederbedrijf van Facebook - regelmatig in het nieuws te vinden. Zo bleek tijdens een rechtszaak in januari dat Meta haar AI-modellen trainde op de inhoud van illegaal verkregen boeken en artikelen, en probeerde ze met man en macht de publicatie van het boek "Careless People" tegen te houden, waarin Sarah Wynn-Williams - het voormalige hoofd global policy van Facebook - de vele mistappen en onethische keuzes van het bedrijf beschrijft.

Toch is deze situatie niet nieuw voor Meta, want sinds de oprichting van het grootste sociale netwerk ter wereld is het van het ene controversiële schandaal in het andere beland, met enorme gevolgen van dien.

In deze aflevering van Het Data Doelwit duiken we in de geschiedenis van Facebook, en zien we hoe deze organisaties alles op alles zet om activiteit op haar platform te maximaliseren, zonder verantwoordelijkheid te nemen over de gevolgen hiervan.
