On this episode of Parentrepreneurs Club, Laura talks to Richard Morris, a Cyber Account Manager at one of Lincolnshire’s leading cyber security companies called KryptoKloud. Richard’s job involves managing accounts and protecting organisations from malicious attacks by harmful individuals. He is passionate about providing insight and taking away the mystique that can surround cyber security.
Listeners will learn about the value of curiosity and passion, the importance of emotional connection when selling, and the risks of social media addiction. The episode also features the experiences of people in the technology industry and offers insights into how to navigate difficult situations.
[00:03:00] The Biggest cybersecurity myth is that 'it won't affect me', but it affects all organizations.
[00:04:29] Protect your data: understand it, use complicated passwords, enable multifactor authentication, use email security and antivirus, invest in protection, and prioritize customer data. Use resources like the National Cybersecurity Centre for advice.
[00:08:11] The importance of personal service, empathy, and passion in the industry.
[00:09:54] Adding value is a cliched phrase in business, but it doesn't just mean monetary gains. Adding value could also mean making an organisation more effective and creating solutions that make employees happier. Happiness has enormous value, though it's difficult to quantify. Finding a core emotional route and having passion for what you do can make selling easier.
[00:12:24] It all comes down to passion and curiosity; the more people I speak to who I would deem to be successful, the more I find they're actually more curious about everything else around them. They're curious about people, they're curious about things. And just that nature of curiosity seems to mean that you ask better questions. And when you get better questions, you get more interesting answers and then that becomes more self perpetuating because you learn more.
00:16:24 If you want to work in sales, if you don't like failure, find something else, seriously. Because you are going to fail many more times than you're going to succeed. And it's hard.
[00:19:35] Richard is open about his mental health, experiences with anxiety and depression, and the negative effects of social media on mental health, especially for younger generations. The constant dopamine hits and superficial content can be draining on the brain.
[00:22:47] Be mindful of phone use, set strict boundaries, take breaks to decompress and build resilience. Use creative solutions like lockboxes or safes.
[00:25:05] Talk to someone about your struggles. Technology has its risks, but it has also been incredible in helping people with various conditions. It has brought people together during the COVID-19 pandemic and has saved lives. However, it should still be guarded.
[00:27:10] Learn how to create a learning culture and push down authority and knowledge with lessons from Captain David Marquette's book "Turn This Ship Around" to get the most out of your team or organization. Also, consider reading George Orwell's "1984" for its insights on personal liberty and a healthy scepticism.
