In this teaching from our verse by verse study through the New Testament, we look at 2 Peter chapter 3 and the reality of the second coming of Jesus Christ. Peter begins this section by reminding us of the importance of being stirred up in our faith. He uses a beautiful term for the believers, calling them beloved. This reminds us that we are the objects of God’s love, and because He loves us, He gives us clear instructions on how to navigate the days we live in.

Peter warns us about the rise of scoffers in the last days. These are individuals who follow their own desires and mock the idea that Christ will return or that a final judgment is coming. They often rely on the argument that things have always been the same since the beginning of creation. However, Peter points out that this is a deliberate choice to overlook how God has intervened in history before. From the very creation of the world by the word of God to the global judgment of the flood in the time of Noah, God has shown that He is active, He is holy, and He is a judge.

As we see the world around us changing, it is easy to become apathetic or even fearful. But for those of us in the Calvary Chapel family and the broader body of Christ, these truths should animate our lives. Peter encourages us to anchor our spirituality on the reliable revelation of God’s word rather than our own shifting feelings or experiences. Both the Old Testament prophets and the New Testament apostles provide a consistent message: Jesus is coming back.

Just as Harry Truman at Mount St. Helens ignored repeated warnings of the coming eruption, many today scoff at the warnings found in the Bible. But God is patient, not wanting anyone to perish but wanting all to come to repentance. This study challenges us to examine where we stand. Are we awake and invigorated by the hope of the Gospel? Or have we allowed the noise of the world to lull us into a spiritual sleep? Join us as we look at what it means to live with situational awareness, recognizing that we are indeed living in the last days and that our hope is found in the return of our Lord and Savior.
