Peter Drury isn't just any Football Commentator; according to me, he is the best there is and by quite some margin.
Peter and I sat down before the resumption of the Premier League post-lockdown to speak about a whole slew of topics. Peter talked about how Football decorates our lives and that although there were matters of much greater concern during the lockdown, we shouldn't be ashamed to admit the fact that we felt a big void in our lives without the beautiful game.
Peter shed light on his fascination with words and language that he's had from a very early age. While this fascination is what prompted him to gun for a career in broadcasting, he is quick to admit the fact that the flowery and flamboyant manner in which he commentates can come across as a bit pretentious and verbose to some at times. Having said that, he doesn't make a conscious effort to inhibit this style because that is just how he is and trying to be someone he isn't would only end in tears. In fact, the one piece of advice that he gives to budding commentators at the end of the show is to escape competition through authenticity because no one can beat you at being you.
Peter comprehensively describes how he prepares for commentary stints and how imperative it is to plan ahead when trying to juggle commentating in the FA Cup, Champions League, and Premier League. Speaking of preparation, Peter talks about why a Liverpool-Manchester United game is actually one of the easiest to prepare for despite being one of the biggest fixtures in the footballing calendar. He also sheds light on his viral piece of commentary describing Kostas Manolas's goal for Roma against Barcelona, which he claims was completely unscripted and instinctive. The conversation also entailed speaking about his love for the FA Cup and Cricket, the self-doubt and insecurities that continue to plague him despite having spent years in the broadcasting profession, and why he thinks that being on social media is not good for his mental well-being.
If you're a budding journalist / commentator / broadcaster or just a fan of the beautiful game, this conversation is tailor-made for you!
