2 Samuel 15: Uncontrolled ambitions in the heart of a son.2 Samuel 15:5-15:
And so it was, whenever anyone came near to bow down to him, that he would put out his hand and take him and kiss him. In this manner Absalom acted toward all Israel who came to the king for judgment. So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel. Now it came to pass after forty years that Absalom said to the king, “Please, let me go to Hebron and pay the vow which I made to the Lord. For your servant took a vow while I dwelt at Geshur in Syria, saying, ‘If the Lord indeed brings me back to Jerusalem, then I will serve the Lord.’ ” And the king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he arose and went to Hebron. Then Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then you shall say, ‘Absalom reigns in Hebron!’ ” And with Absalom went two hundred men invited from Jerusalem, and they went along innocently and did not know anything. Then Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, from his city—from Giloh—while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy grew strong, for the people with Absalom continually increased in number. Now a messenger came to David, saying, “The hearts of the men of Israel are with Absalom.” So David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise, and let us flee, or we shall not escape from Absalom. Make haste to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly and bring disaster upon us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword.” And the king’s servants said to the king, “We are your servants, ready to do whatever my Lord the king commands.”---------------------------The following chapters are full of adventure, action and suspense, and I know that they are going to teach you many things and, at the same time, they will keep you glued to the pages of the Bible. That is why you cannot miss any detail and must read all the complete chapters.
Yesterday we saw how Absalom was pardoned by David, his father. His father received him and Absalom continued with his normal life, but what David did not know is that Absalom had many ambitions, he wanted to be the king of Israel and he had a plan drawn up to dethrone his own father.Absalom first shrewdly use his position to win the hearts of the Israelites in dishonest and deceitful ways.Later he tricks his father by telling him that he is going to offer sacrifices to God when he was really organizing his followers to proclaim him as the new king of Israel. When David heard that Absalom proclaimed himself king of Israel, he was very afraid and fled from his own son, because David understood Absalom's evil intentions and that he was capable of exterminating him and the entire royal house. This chapter illustrates the danger of a son who, feeding an overflowing ambition outside of God's will and with egocentric intentions, can even harm his own family. In addition to Absalom's ego and lust for power, we can assume that Absalom lost respect for his father because he did nothing to defend the honor of Tamar, his sister, and perhaps also had resentments against his father.Absalom had become so powerful that David was aware of the reach of his son and that Absalom could do them a lot of damage to the point of extermination. This week I read the story of a 10 year old boy who fatally shot his mother because she didn't buy him a video game. This was already prophesied by Paul, when he said that parents would become the murderers of his children, and his children would become patricides. All this would happen in our time because the wickedness of many would increase and the love of many would grow cold.Romans 1:28-31 says: "And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful;..."
Today I hope we have understood the danger of not grounding our children in truth, justice and compassion. Let's lay a firm foundation of love, guidance, correction and forgiveness on our children so that they guard their hearts from evil impulses and desires.
