Riverside Reading Plan

2 Samuel 22

Listen Later

This chapter presents David's song of praise, nearly identical to Psalm 18, composed as a retrospective on God's faithfulness throughout his life. Using vivid imagery of divine rescue—God parting heavens, riding on cherubim, shooting lightning arrows—David celebrates deliverance from enemies and specifically from Saul. He attributes his victories to divine support while acknowledging God's justice in rewarding righteousness and integrity. While claiming personal righteousness (reflecting his general faithfulness rather than sinlessness), David recognizes that God's enabling grace allowed him to triumph over adversaries and rise to international prominence. The poem concludes with praise for God's unfailing kindness to David and his descendants forever—language that New Testament writers would later apply to Christ's resurrection as the ultimate divine vindication of his anointed one.
