2 Samuel 6: Learning what the fear of God means.

2 Samuel 6:3-12:
So they set the ark of God on a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill; and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drove the new cart. And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill, accompanying the ark of God; and Ahio went before the ark. Then David and all the house of Israel played music before the Lord on all kinds of instruments of fir wood, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on sistrums, and on cymbals. And when they came to Nachon’s threshing floor, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. Then the anger of the Lord was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him there for his error; and he died there by the ark of God. And David became angry because of the Lord’s outbreak against Uzzah; and he called the name of the place Perez Uzzah to this day. David was afraid of the Lord that day; and he said, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” So David would not move the ark of the Lord with him into the City of David; but David took it aside into the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite three months. And the Lord blessed Obed-Edom and all his household. Now it was told King David, saying, “The Lord has blessed the house of Obed-Edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.” So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with gladness.
----------------------------------

This is one of the very few very hard lessons that David and the people learned about God's discipline when it comes to keeping His word.
David wanted to bring the ark of God that for many years was in charge of one of the families of the Levites who were part of those in charge of taking care of the holy things of God, but he wanted to do it his way. They put the ark on a cart just like the Philistines did. The procession had turned into a great celebration to see the ark heading towards the city of Jerusalem and everyone was happy to see the ark return after many years. But the party was suddenly interrupted when the ark almost fell over and one of the priest's sons, who was guarding the carriage with the ark, tried to hold it up with his hands. By doing this, broke God's law that no one could touch it but that it must be carried by means of poles and must be carried on the shoulders.
God displayed the greatness of His holiness, His power and His sovereignty in a way that David was terrified, because he had not experienced the power of God in that way.
Just as the Philistines had returned the ark because they could not contain the power of God in their cities and were even dying of plagues, God showed His people that they could not invent new forms of worship; that if they really want His presence in their cities, that they should do it as He Himself had established it, not as they wanted to do it even if it looked very nice and even if they had a good intention. It is not enough to have a good intention if it contradicts the ordinances of the Lord.
Later we will see that David recognizes the reason why God punished them, because they did not do so according to the already established law.

This is what it means to fear God. Understand that I cannot make fun of Him, nor can I deceive Him. That nothing is going to replace His Word, no matter how nice it looks or feels. That I should not follow God according to my criteria or my ideas. That I cannot manipulate God with my actions but that I must follow Him according to His ordinances. I am the one who must inquire how I must please God, how I must worship and serve Him, what are His conditions, His rules, His ordinances.
Let's be careful not to get carried away by our emotions. They deceive us into thinking that we are fine and that we can cover up certain actions and bad habits by simply doing charity work or doing something good, and thus try to evade our responsibility to order our steps.
We are all going to go through this experience where we are going to think we are fine but then the Lord is going to call our attention, He is going to correct us and we are going to feel the pain of rebuke. In one way or another, the Lord is going to indicate to us that He is not happy with the way we are leading our spiritual life. When this happens, let us give glory to God and be thankful, because this means that God loves us and does not want us to lose ourselves but to achieve salvation and eternal life.
To fear God is to recognize that without God we are nothing, that living without Him is the worst thing that can happen to a human being. That the source of peace, prosperity, love and hope comes from Him, and that it is better to listen and obey to God when He wants to correct us than to do our own will.

David was surprised and saddened by the Lord's action, but later he was happy to hear that the ark, which had been transported to the house of obed-Edom, was being blessed. Then David understood that it is God's way and not his that tribute must be paid to God. And David reunited the people to transport the ark of God and celebrate but in God's way.

May the Lord give you discernment and wisdom to serve God together with your family according to how He commands you.
