The Good You Can Do

20. New Zealand's hidden link to the palm oil industry

Listen Later

This episode is the audio version of a recent blog post we published on Palm Kernel Extract imports to New Zealand, which has received a lot of attention and has been shared hundreds of times on social media.

It turns out, we import more than twice as much palm kernel extract as China, India and Australia combined. And those countries have a combined 63.5 million dairy cows (we have 6.1 million).

In Indonesia, where rainforests are cleared to make way for industrial palm oil plantations, deforestation is responsible for 80% of the whole country’s CO2 emissions. This made Indonesia at one point the world’s third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases (according to Greenpeace).
