It’s been 400 years since the first enslaved Africans were brought to North America. From 1619-1865 America built it's foundation on the free labour of black enslaved people. After the slavery was "abolished" it took on a new form in 1877 known as Jim Crow which lasted all the way until 1960. At this point it morphed once again from 1934-1968 and was then known as red lining. Now we're in the new slavery from 1970-present known as mass incarceration.

There’s a direct line from slavery to the fact that Black people, while only 13% of the overall population, make up 40% of the prison populationOpens a new window. Slavery isn’t something from the distant past—its impact is felt and seen right now, particularly by Black Americans, every single day.
