#20 Welcome beginners! Recap NHL playoffs together

Listen Later

As a newcomer to Canada and someone who's never played and watched ice hockey before, I was surprised and excited by the energy surrounding ice hockey here, especially during the Stanley Cup playoffs in session. This year our local team Vancouver Canucks seems to have been doing well and I am feeling way more enthusiasm from people in Vancouver than last year because they are in Round Two which is remarkable.

First of all, because I have the least knowledge of rules and why there is so much energy toward this playoffs, let’s look up from the basics together.

Speaking of the fundamentals of Ice hockey, it is a fast-paced game played on an ice rink where teams try to score goals by hitting a puck into the opponent's net with sticks. It's a game known for its speed and intensity, and it’s incredibly popular in Canada. In fact, the president of the company I am working for has a daughter playing ice hockey and he used to play.

Next, catch up about why this year of Stanley Cup playoffs is so special to Vancouver Canucks. Let me tell you how the NHL playoff works overall first because I have no idea.

In the beginning, according to Chat GPT, 16 teams qualify for the playoffs—8 from the Eastern Conference and 8 from the Western Conference. Each conference has two divisions. The top three teams from each division automatically qualify, making up 6 teams per conference. The remaining two spots in each conference are filled by the next two highest-placed teams in the conference, regardless of division. The playoffs consist of four rounds: the First Round, the Second Round, the Conference Finals, and the Stanley Cup Finals. What is most surprising is that each of the four rounds is a best-of-7; the first team to win four games advances to the next round. That’s a lot…

Speaking of The Vancouver Canucks, they are part of the Pacific Division within the Western Conference. How they are doing good is that they beat the Nashville Predators in Tennessee 4-2 in Round One. They are now in Round Two as of May 13, 2024, and competing with Edmonton Oilers 2-1. They are about to win and take us to the Conference Finals! That’s why people in Vancouver are enthusiastic about their games.

One of the remarkable aspects of their journey was the performance of their third-string goalie, Arturs Silovs. With their top goalies injured, Silovs stepped up, achieving a 1.70 goals-against average and a .938 save percentage.

Experiencing this hockey fever has been incredible. The Vancouver Canucks' success has brought immense joy and excitement to their fans, showcasing the deep passion Canadians have for this sports.
