The D&Igest: Diversity & Inclusion at work

20. What is disability denial and how do we ask for accommodations and proactive disability inclusion? With Julie Harris

Listen Later

After a severe brain injury, Julie Harris lost all memory of the first 20 years of her life. As a result of her own experience, she is now a disability inclusion trainer and consultant, helping organisations better support their employees, and helping people with a disability.

We spoke with Julie about how her circumstances have affected her in work and life. She guides us through her journey, from having to completely relearn how to interact with people to the struggle she faced with admitting that she has a disability and to how she has excelled despite this and how her experiences have helped her build her career.

Julie uncovers how experiences can differ between people who were born with a disability and people who have been affected later in life. She also offers guidance for organisations and their employees.

We asked Julie:

  • How can organisations better understand what options they can provide for staff with disabilities?
  • How can you ensure your onboarding processes are inclusive?
  • What does ableism mean and how can we recognise it?
  • What should you ask a company for as a disabled person in need of support?
  • If you’re seeking to better understand how you can genuinely support people with a disability in your organisation, or if you’re seeking support yourself, this is an episode not to be missed.
