In the Bible, the second death (permanent)  is contrasted with the first death (temporary) which Jesus describes as a sleep. From this sleep, the saved will awake to receive eternal life while the lost—who have rejected the gift of Christ’s life—will have to pay for their sins with their own lives, and die a second time.
